Recent national learning assessments show that despite high school enrolment in rural India,
many children continue to struggle with foundational literacy and numeracy. The Annual Status
of Education Report (ASER) 2024, a nationally representative rural learning survey reaching
over 650,000 children, highlights persistent gaps in basic reading and arithmetic skills, even as
classroom learning shows signs of recovery post-pandemic.
In response to this learning crisis, Gyanarjan Kendra was initiated as a community-based
remedial education model to strengthen foundational skills and improve learning outcomes
among children from underserved communities.
Launched in 2013, Gyanarjan Kendra works closely with government schools to provide
structured, after-school academic support. Currently, the programme operates in 3 Centers with
students from nearby government schools.
Each centre caters to around 30 students and offers personalized academic support in
Mathematics, Science, and Language, using activity-based and child-friendly pedagogy. The
programme emphasizes regular assessments, focused mentoring, and close engagement with
parents and teachers to reinforce learning continuity.
By addressing foundational learning gaps at an early stage, Gyanarjan Kendra aims to strengthen
school retention, improve academic confidence, and create pathways for long-term educational
success.
